A Guide to the Demilitarization of American Youth
(The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation)

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation is reaching out to the future with a new publication geared toward inspiring action in today’s youth. “A Guide to the Demilitarization of American Youth” is packed with information and ideas to help the next generation of activists organize to create alternatives to increasingly militarized campuses and our cycle of perpetual violence.

What is the militarization of America’s youth? It is high school students seeing the results of Bush’s “No Child Left Behind” (by military recruiters) policy, ROTC programs in colleges and JROTC programs in high schools actively seeking disadvantaged students to indoctrinate into the war machine, and advanced weapons research being conducted at public universities, often funded by weapons industry giants. With so much money and resources pushing America’s future down the same old one-way street, this publication is a breath of fresh air.

Articles provide students with advice and ideas on how to demilitarize their own high school or university. There is a piece on how the “Patriot” Act directly interferes with students’ basic freedoms, and a thorough guide on exposing and protesting military and corporate influence on college campuses.

Additionally, high school students are provided a form that they can fill out and turn in to their school’s administration to be removed from the lists given to military recruiters. Their slightly older brothers and sisters at college institutions are shown how to determine if biological weapons research, such as that done on anthrax, is taking place in a classroom near them.

With the aforementioned articles and much more, this publication has the potential of being a vital tool for the campus activist. It, among other things, is available for viewing at the http://www.wagingpeace.org/youth. The information is out there; utilize it!
