Imagine if you will, various non profits that you really love and care for and help with.. Imagine you can earn HOURS that you can exchange for various services, like plumbing, massage, a car drive, a meal made or a class to learn how to cook, sew, prune, etc......
more people cleaning creeks or the ocean
spreading the publicity and promotional efforts of ECOSLO or the Sierra Club
or the clean up after an event to entice people to clean up and earn HOURS
or to add those email addresses into your data base
or postering flyers for an event
or making those precious phone calls to the media
or putting on an event....

Non-Profits giving TimeBank HOURS to their volunteers
Non-profit organizations involvement in the Wood River TimeExchange has been a goal since our soft start in 2011. Now, we have a plan and it looks like this.
All non-profits are invited to join the TimeExchange as members for a $50 membership. As a member, the non-profit opens an account from which their volunteers can draw time dollars according to the hours they've donated to the organization. The non-profit is allowed to run a deficit balance over time, just as the TimeExchange itself does.
Meanwhile, those who volunteer for the non-profit, and who want to get credit for their time, join the TimeExchange as individual members. The hours that they collect for their volunteer efforts can then be used to "purchase" services from any other member of the TimeExchange, not just from that non-profit nor just from their fellow volunteers for that non-profit.
For example, Jigsaw is now a non-profit member of the Wood River TimeExchange. Any TimeExchange member who volunteers to help Jigsaw will get credit for the hours given in service. Conversely, Jigsaw can now provide volunteers the opportunity to receive services from the TimeExchange and the community in exchange for their help; all volunteers have to do is apply to and make their membership fee donation to the TimeExchange.
In this arrangement, Jigsaw runs a deficit, much as the Wood River Time Exchange itself. But this is OK. As my fellow coordinator, Manon Gaudreau, writes, "The magnitude of the deficit for a non-profit simply reflects the number of volunteers who are actively working for it - and for our community!"
She adds, "Any 'hours' a non-profit can give back to its volunteers and other Time Exchange members is icing on the cake: a way of saying thank you for helping us out." Non-profits can reduce their deficits, if they like, by providing meeting space, admission to scheduled events and classes, or products and skills that come out of their non-profit scope. It seems that every non-profit has something to offer but, if not, no problem.
Manon eloquently explains, "Each volunteer's willingness to give hours to a non-profit is a vote and a tribute to the values and the actions promoted by the non-profit entity. Moreover, it demonstrates volunteers' commitment to support a good cause for the sake of creating a better world. And the more the volunteers add 'hours' to their TimeExchange account, the greater the stimulus to use their 'hours' to exchange services with other members of the TimeExchange; volunteers get richer faster (in terms of their TimeExchange account). This collective richness (wealth) is equal to the non-profits' deficits, and represents the investment made in sustaining a healthy, happy, and close-knit community."
All of the TimeExchange's members are involved in at least one, if not several, of the Valley's non-profits.
